City Studies High Buildings of the Future

Colvin and Moggridge Landscape Architects have been appointed to analyse Edinburgh’s city-wide views and skyline, to  be used to assess the role of new high buildings in future developments.

Edinburgh World Heritage, The City of Edinburgh Council, Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothian, and Historic Scotland have appointed the consultants to review the city’s current high building policy so that any changes can influence the new draft City Plan, due out for consultation with the public at the end of the year.

Tall Buildings

The issue of tall buildings is particularly important for the World Heritage Site. The landscape setting and views into and out of the Site are a key part its significance which could be at risk from intrusive new development.

Recently both Vienna and Cologne have been under close scrutiny from UNESCO because of tall buildings encroaching on their World Heritage Sites. Edinburgh World Heritage will only promote new development of the highest quality and appropriate scale, and maintain a watchful eye on the application of planning control.
