The Sherlock Violin The 150th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's birth was recently marked here in Edinburgh with the creation of The 'Sherlock' violin by instrument maker Steve Burnett. This unique violin was made from an elderly sycamore tree that stood in the garden of Liberton Bank House - Conan Doyle’s childhood home which was converted into Dunedin School by the Cockburn Conservation Trust. This special tree, which Conan Doyle climbed as a boy, sadly had to come down due to diseased roots.
The violin was created in Steve's central Edinburgh workshop in the spirit of the golden age Italian makers. Much influence was drawn from one of the greatest masters, Giuseppe Guarnerius del Gesù, the maker of Nicolò Paganini’s violin and like Guarneri's late period violins, the 'Sherlock' possesses a full, mature, golden tone.
