World Heritage SitesIn 1972 the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) began to identify places throughout the world that are of global significance. They surpass local or national importance and are part of the shared heritage of mankind. In UNESCO’s words they are of ‘outstanding universal value’. The list of World Heritage Sites includes places such as The Great Wall of China, The Pyramids and The Statue of Liberty. More about World Heritage Sites
In this country Scottish Ministers put forward sites for nomination, and through Historic Scotland are responsible for ensuring compliance with the UNESCO Convention on World Heritage. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for the UK's general compliance with the Convention. More about other UK World Heritage Sites Once inscribed on the list authorities must ensure the proper managing, monitoring and preserving of the World Heritage Site. A management plan must be devised to ensure the outstanding universal values of the Site are conserved and enhanced. Find out more about how the Edinburgh World Heritage Site is managed. |
