Step Up to Calton HillCalton Hill is one the most significant parts of the World Heritage Site, the location of some of the most iconic Edinburgh landmarks, protected for its valuable wildlife and with stunning panoramic views across the city. The EWH funded interpretation and signage project for the hill is now successfully complete. A series of wayfinders and welcome panels will help visitors explore the hill, and interpretation panels tell the history of some of the city’s most iconic monuments. For the first time there are also viewpoint panels, to help interpret the famous stunning view across the Old and New Towns. The next stage of improvements to Calton Hill is underway, with conservation work to the steps from Waterloo Place. EWH has awarded a grant of £50,000 for the project which will see the replacement of broken parts of the decorative ironmongery and handrails. Repairs to the stone steps are also being carried out, retaining the original stone so as not to lose the wear and tear which adds to their character.
