Well Court Celebration On Friday 20 November, the owners and residents of Well Court, along with invited guests, gathered to celebrate the completion of its repairs.
It was back in February 2007 that work started on one of EWH’s biggest repair projects, involving 55 different owners and with grant of £1.1 million.
Well Court was built between 1883-84 as new housing for local workers, and was designed by Sydney Mitchell. The building was commissioned by J.R.Findlay, the proprietor of The Scotsman newspaper.
The extensive repair work was carefully carried out using only traditional materials, such as sandstone from Dumfries, and handmade clay roof tiles.
Details like the correct window pattern were also restored, but the crowing glory was the repair and re-gilding of the clock faces and weathercock.
The celebration was able to use the newly restored courtyard for the first time. It has been fitted with retractable washing poles, to enable the courtyard to be used for outdoor community events such as ceildhs.
Now the scaffolding has come down, Well Court can be admired again by passers-by on the Water of Leith as “...a picturesque, beautifully composed jumble of crowstepped gables and turrets.”
