Edinburgh World Heritage - Friends of Canongate Kirkyard

Friends of Canongate Kirkyard

Who are we? A new, informal group of people with a common interest in the Canongate Kirkyard in Edinburgh’s Old Town.  We aim to enhance and maintain this historic space for the benefit of the local community and visitors and to make it better known and understood.  We welcome new members, young and old.

Enhancing the Kirkyard
We want to make the Kirkyard more attractive and ecologically diverse while respecting and enhancing its status as a historic site of Christian burial. We have improved the garden around the Mercat Cross and planted bare areas at the front of the church, using plants kindly donated by the City of Edinburgh Council.
We also plan to control the growth of potentially harmful plants so as to prevent any further damage to monuments.   Along with upgrading pathways and other features this will make the kirkyard more inviting and accessible to our local community and visitors.
