EWH Climate Challenge Fund award

EWH has been awarded a grant by the Climate Challenge Fund for a new project.

Mar 30, 2011

Edinburgh World Heritage has been awarded £33,413 by the Climate Challenge Fund for a new project focusing on energy efficiency in the World Heritage Site.

The Climate Challenge Fund forms part of the Scottish Government’s Sustainable Action Fund, and grants are designed to help communities reduce their carbon emissions. Last year EWH organised a series of initiatives aimed at promoting energy efficiency in historic buildings, and this project looks to address new challenges and audiences.

Chiara Ronchini, Energy Efficiency Officer for Edinburgh World Heritage said: "I'm delighted that we are able to continue our energy efficiency activities with even more communities in the World Heritage Site. The renewed Climate Challenge Funding will enable us to carry out very exciting community-led projects, historic gardens and sustainable traditional skills workshops. I’d like to thank all the residents and the partner organisations for their invaluable support for this new project."

The new project will include community-led projects, such as developing gardens and biodiversity projects in the Old Town. Gardening classes will enable residents to make the most of their green spaces, selecting appropriate local and historically accurate crops.

Energy efficiency advice and guidance will be available through the EWH website, a newsletter for traditionally built properties and listed homes in the World Heritage Site, and tailored advice to homeowners through on-site surveys and visits.

Practical workshops will teach residents techniques such as the installation of concealed draught-proofing in sash and case windows, sheep-wool loft insulation in hard to treat properties, natural and local materials, historic shutters, natural ventilation.

To encourage people to leave the car at home, leaflets, newsletters and on-line information will promote short/medium-distance walks around the World Heritage Site

The project starts next month and finishes in March 2012. For updates visit the EWH website and the project’s Facebook page.
