Making the most of World Heritage status

A special briefing for businesses was held on World Heritage Day.

Apr 18, 2011

The event, delivered by the Edinburgh Tourism Action Group and Edinburgh World Heritage, was aimed at giving businesses an insight into how to use the city’s unique built heritage as a promotional tool, and to enhance the quality of the visitor experience they deliver.

Visitor surveys consistently confirm that Edinburgh’s built heritage is the city’s biggest draw for tourists. Some 71% of visitors say the city’s history influenced their decision to come, and 82% found the architecture the most impressive feature during their visit. Surveys by TripAdvisor have recently reinforced this, placing Edinburgh as the most recommended UK World Heritage Site, and the fifth most recommended in the world.

To help unlock this potential, delegates were asked to consider using trails or details of the history of their own building in marketing material, to promote local hidden gems or use World Heritage news in their social media or what’s on listings.
