World Monument Fund Visits Edinburgh

Officials from the World Monument Fund visited Edinburgh last month, following the inclusion of Edinburgh’s historic graveyards on the World Monuments Fund Watch List.

Edinburgh’s graveyards have been listed as one of six sites representing UK and Ireland on the Word Monuments Fund Watch 2010. The list calls international attention to cultural heritage around the world that is threatened by neglect, vandalism, conflict or disaster.

The five graveyards included in the listing are Greyfriears Kirkyard, Canongate Kirkyard, St Cuthberts Kirkyard, Old Calton Burial Ground and New Calton Burial Ground. They are all within the World Heritage site and are the result of the Church of Scotland date from the late 16th century.

Jonathan Foyle, the World Monument Fund UK Chief Executive, and Project Director David Gundry came to visit Edinburgh on 20 January to study the condition of the graveyards. They met all the key partners involved in the project, EWH, the City of Edinburgh Council and representatives of the three churches adjacent to the Kirkyards.

The visitors noted the scale of these celebrations of life and death, and the exceptionalquality of stone carving. They also appreciated the immensity of the job that lays ahead, safekeeping these treasures from further degeneration, offering their initial thought on how all the different groups might proceed with a project. The graveyards provide quiet and green oasis for busy city folk, but exposure to the elements and vandalism threaten the future of the monuments and the safety of visitors.

The partners involved with the visit represent a forthcoming Historic Graveyards Trust which will address the crucial conservation and management issues affecting the sites.
