Climate Challenge grant for EWH

EWH has been awarded a grant of £190,000 to fund energy efficiency and sustainability projects.

Mar 19, 2012

The funding from the Climate Challenge Fund is for three years, enabling energy efficiency and sustainability projects to continue until 2015, with the addition of a new position for a Youth Officer to deliver green projects with the involvement of children and young people.

Adam Wilkinson, Director of Edinburgh World Heritage said: “This project is an important step, building on previous work in demonstrating how historic buildings can be made energy efficient in a sensitive way. The opportunity to appoint a Youth Officer is particularly exciting, allowing us to engage with a new and broader audience. Above all this project will be encouraging people to get involved, through practical DIY workshops, creating green space in the heart of the World Heritage Site or leaving the car at home in favour of walking or cycling in the city centre."

The new Green Heritage Project aims to reduce fuel poverty and cut carbon emissions in the World Heritage Site by 600 tonnes of CO2 by the end of March 2015. The new community-led projects will include practical energy efficiency workshops, creating more historic vegetable gardens, food-waste activities and innovative active travel initiatives.

The EWH Energy Efficiency Manager will work with local communities in fuel poverty and in disadvantaged areas around the World Heritage Site. A new Youth Officer will also be appointed to work with young people, to encourage them to champion the climate change agenda and ensure that green skills are passed on to future generations.
