Welcome Aboard the World Heritage Tour

Edinburgh Bus Tours has launched a new tour of the World Heritage Site.

Apr 2, 2012

The ‘Edinburgh World Heritage Official Tour’ offer visitors the opportunity to discover fascinating facts about historical events and people that have shaped Edinburgh’s iconic landmarks in and around the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns.

This new tour, created in partnership with Edinburgh World Heritage, comes with multi-language commentary and offers informed commentary in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. The low floor fleet, each with a designated wheelchair space, also houses a monitor downstairs with a précised version of the tour for the hearing impaired.

Ian Craig, Managing Director of Lothian Buses which owns Edinburgh Bus Tours commented: “As Scotland’s third most visited paid attraction, Edinburgh Bus Tours is committed to offering domestic and overseas customers the highest quality of informed, entertaining visitor experience continually developing the tours.

“The launch of Edinburgh World Heritage Official Tour will offer visitors to Scotland’s Capital the opportunity to enjoy a five star quality city tour that succinctly narrates the significance of key cultural landmarks and their role in shaping both Edinburgh and Scotland’s rich cultural heritage."

Aboard an open-top tour bus, visitors depart from Waverley Bridge on a seven mile tour to take in a variety of breathtaking vistas and fascinating facts. Highlights include the Robert Adam-designed Georgian House, Dean Bridge, the Dean Gallery, the neo-gothic 19th century St Mary’s Cathedral, and the facts surrounding Greyfriars Bobby that faithful Skye Terrier lay on his masters grave for fourteen years.

There is also the chance to hear about the educational and cultural significance of Fettes College, the Galleries and the High Kirk of St Giles’. Enjoy a soldier’s eye view of the imposing Castle as you travel through the medieval Grassmarket, the scene of many a grisly public execution.

Adam Wilkinson Director of Edinburgh World Heritage added: “We are delighted to have worked with Edinburgh Bus Tours towards the launch of the Edinburgh World Heritage Official Tour. We hope that this will encourage visitors to further explore the World Heritage Site, and discover some of its more hidden treasures. The tour neatly encapsulates the key contrasts of the Old and New Towns, and will clearly show visitors why Edinburgh is such an important historic city.”

In 2011 Edinburgh Bus Tours achieved the highest accolade from VisitScotland attaining five stars for excellence in recognition of its exceptionally high standard of facilities and services for visitors. This prestigious award, only achieved by a small percentage of visitor attractions, puts Edinburgh Bus Tours alongside other five star attractions in Edinburgh, including Edinburgh Castle and Royal Yacht Britannia. This new tour further cements its position as an award-winning visitor attraction.

The tour launches on 2 April and costs £12 for Adults, £11 Students/ Senior and £5 Children aged 5-15. Family passes for two Adults and three Children are £28. Tours leave Waverley Bridge every 20 minutes. A 24 hour ticket allows passengers to hop on and off to explore the famous sites.  For more information visit: www.edinburghtour.com.
