Director's Notes - June 2012

Monthly update from EWH Director Adam Wilkinson.

Jun 20, 2012

At the Europa Nostra Congress in Lisbon in June, I had the privilege of charing a session ofthe Forum "Saving Europe's Endangered Heritage", with inspiring presentations from a range of organisations that involve themselves in different stages of the process, from Cultural Heritage Without Borders to le Fondation du Patrimoine to the Fondo Ambiente Italiano.

All of these organisations run brilliant initiatives, and the FAI has one in which it would like your participation, taking the view that the heritage of Italy is an international heritage. Its 2012 census of Italian Heritage - "The Places of the Heart" is now open. It is a reminder to all of us that our cultural inheritance transcends national boundaries.

Back with EWH, we are thrilled to welcome a range of new people to the organisation - at board level we are joined by Jim MacDonald, Malcolm Reading and Dorothy Wright. You can read more about them here. As a part of our successful application to the Climate Challenge Fund, we recently advertised for a Youth officer, and following an excellent response, we are to be joined by Naomi Webster.

The fourth edition of the EWH Journal has been produced, exploring the issues at stake in the city, as well as the work of EWH. It can be downloaded here.

And finally, we must note the untimely passing of a great friend of Edinburgh, Herb Stovel. It is hard to choose any one of the very many obituaries out there as they all reflect different aspects of a rich life and the depth of his work in our field, giving him the authority to tell us, in clear and uncertain terms, where we've got it wrong - as well as where we're doing well.
