Conservation Update

EWH has awarded grants for conservation work at Teviot Place, the Bedlam Theatre and Windsor Street.

Bedlam Theatre

As part of a programme of major repairs to the Beldam Theatre at Bristo Place, EWH is helping to fund the replacement of cast-iron railings around the building. The project will help to enhance the streetscape in a busy part of the World Heritage Site.

The originals were removed during World War II as part of a government drive to aid the war effort. The replacements will be based on surviving examples from nearby churches all designed by the same architect, Thomas Hamilton.

The railings will be made at Ballantine’s Foundry, one of the few firms in Scotland to still use traditional casting techniques.

Teviot Place

An EWH grant of £9,318 is helping to restore a traditional shopfront at a category C(s) listed building in the Old Town.

The building dates to 1872 and was designed by R.Thornton Shiells in a Scots Baronial style. The block was developed at the same time as the Medical School and Royal Infirmary nearby, and so originally many of the ground floor shops sold medical equipment, books and clothing.

The project will replace modern aluminium window and door frames with traditional oak, putting back some of the history and architecture which existed here in the past.

Windsor Street

EWH has awarded a grant of £9,829 to support the restoration of a cast iron balcony at a category A listed Georgian town house.

Windsor Street is particularly significant as it is one of the few completed parts of a masterplan drawn up by William Playfair in 1822. His grand scheme would have seen a major extension to the New Town built to the north of Calton Hill, but an economic crisis meant that funds for the project dried up and his plan was never fully realised.
