Edinburgh and Kracow forge links

The two World Heritage cities share their experience of urban regeneration.

Nov 2, 2012

On 15th October 2012 Krzysztof Chuchra (EWH Urban Analyst) and John Bury (Head of Planning and Building Standards at the City of Edinburgh Council) went to Krakow to meet colleagues representing the municipality, as a follow up from a meeting last year in Edinburgh. Both World Heritage cities have a long tradition of joint work in the area of planning and urban regeneration, which started in the early 1990s. For example, in July 2012 the Edinburgh design leader joined a panel of judges advising on an international masterplanning competition for Nowa Huta district in Krakow.

The recent visit to Krakow involved roundtable meetings of experts, discussing issues related to masterplanning, urban analysis, conservation and heritage management. The meeting was complemented by presentations, and site visits. It was agreed that the both cities will start focused collaboration in the areas of:

  • Masterplanning and urban regeneration – based on Edinburgh’s experience in strategic planning, and Krakow’s recent experience in organising an international competition on a masterplan for Nowa Huta district and revitalisation of Kazimierz District in 1990s.
  • World Heritage Management – focused on Edinburgh’s long experience in managing its World Heritage Site through the Management Plan and Krakow’s Cultural Park regulations covering the Old Town area.
  • Exchange of staff  - to support each other with an alternative approach to planning and city management. Also, to build up understanding of different cultures of work and open new areas for further collaboration.
  • Opening collaboration between the International Cultural Centre in Krakow and Edinburgh’s Universities in vocational studies of cultural management.
