Director's Notes - November 2012

Monthly update from EWH Director Adam Wilkinson.

Nov 22, 2012

In our newsletters, we tend to focus on what we are doing to make things happen within the city centre World Heritage Site. It is easy to forget that there is a wider world out there, and that our small city (Istanbul’s population is around 30 times greater than ours) is a part of it. EWH is active in this wider world, encouraging people to have a look at how we do things, while we take a look at what they do and see what we can learn.

The most recent initiative on this front is called URBELAC II, and is a joint project run by the European Commission and the Inter-American Development Bank. The aim is to share experience between five European and five Latin American cities in areas of common strength and weakness. At the first meeting of the network, in Bogota, we were overwhelmed by the warmth with which Edinburgh was received, and the interest taken in the work of EWH and others in managing the city centre World Heritage Site. In the coming months we will seek to capitalise on this interest in the city.

We are now a little over the half-way mark in EWH’s financial year. Raising the funds for the operation of the organisation has been going steadily, and we are thrilled at the support for our work we have received from the individuals and companies that have signed up as Friends of EWH. The Caledonian Hotel, refreshed and revived under the Waldorf Astoria brand, gave a magnificent tea for our Friends, many of whom invited along potential new Friends. It gave us the opportunity to remind them about the Big Give which is coming up – for three days in December, every penny you give EWH through the Big Give website will be doubled. We will be emailing with more details closer to the date.
