Primary School maps their heritage

Pupils from Royal Mile Primary School have taken part in an EWH led Community Mapping workshop.

Jun 27, 2014

The workshop was run as part of a program of activities organized by the City Centre Neighbourhood Partnership to celebrated National Walking Month, the events aimed to encourage people who live or work in the area to ‘post a pledge’ and build more walking into their daily routine.

As part of this programme EWH was requested, as part of Walk to School Week, to run the workshop with Royal Mile Primary School. The workshop allowed us to encourage the children to actively engage with the World Heritage site in a fun and sustainable manner as well encouraging a dialogue around walking to school.

The children were asked to draw a map of their journey to school including the things that they liked and disliked on the route, in addition to this they were asked to try and think about thing that the saw, heard and smelled on their path.

Katie Swann the Partnership Development Officer for the City Centre Neighbourhood Team, who requested and helped run the workshop commented that:

“The class had recently done a project on the Old Town, so it was fascinating watching the pictures of their journey to school emerge. The mapping process was ideal for this - the discussion and the drawings showed us just how aware they are of their surroundings, and they felt confident to share their views with us -  buildings, open spaces, buses, shops and friends were the highlights, while crossing the road and smells from rubbish were the things they really didn’t like. It gave us a real insight into their view of the area, with the added bonus of being great fun!”

The pupils were provided with an Exploring Edinburgh Kit which included an Edinburgh World Heritage Site Community Map, a Canongate Treasure Hunt and a World Heritage Site colouring sheet in the hope that they would use these tools to further explore the city on foot with their parents and guardians.
