Gardner’s Crescent Gardens
It is sad to report that the chairman of the Friends of Gardner’s Crescent, Derek Ainsley, passed away on 10 October, aged 93. Derek had led efforts to regenerate the public gardens at Gardner’s Crescent, energising the local community to help plan and support improvements. EWH awarded a grant in 2011 to help with the cost of new railings and stone gateways, one of which is named after Derek.

Eric McAuslan, a member of the Friends of Gardner’s Crescent said: “Derek had the original idea for the refurbishment of the garden over eight years ago and worked tirelessly to raise funding and support for the project.   His quiet determination and diligence brought the project to where it is today, and even in recent months, as his health deteriorated, he tried to make most committee meetings and was looking at other places to chase for funding.  He was a gentle man and a gentleman and will be missed.”

Fiona MacDonald, Conservation Architect for Edinburgh World Heritage said: “Derek will be very much missed and was a real pleasure to work with. He was a great champion for Gardner’s Crescent and achieved a huge amount with his commitment over many years.”

Dunbar’s Close
EWH has awarded a repayable grant of £3,962 to help restore three original window patterns, in a tenement overlooking the Canongate Kirkyard. The block has a prominent front on the Canongate, and also overlooks the Kirkyard on one side. The project will reinstate traditional wooden sash and case windows.
