Director's Notes - February 2015

Monthly update from EWH Director Adam Wilkinson.

Feb 23, 2015

As a small organisation, maintaining momentum is a challenge for us, particularly in the types of projects we like to take on (as they benefit the city most) – usually with multiple owners and stakeholders.

Our plans for the revitalisation of West Maitland Street are a case in point. Of the 24 shops, sixteen have expressed an interest in taking advantage of a mixture of straight grants and refundable grants to restore their shopfronts. Four are large chains that are difficult to penetrate and many business owners speak English as a second language. Add to this the relationships between owners and tenants, and we are firmly into EWH territory of building confidence, demonstrating what can be done and building momentum.

We were therefore thrilled that the installation of the first restored shopfront in the scheme has gone so smoothly, with the business remaining open during works. The second piece of work will start shortly, and a third hopefully soon thereafter. Publicity around the project has resulted in further shops coming forward, and we can see momentum starting to build. We can add to this an excellent study on the economic benefits of shopfront restoration by masters student Eoghan Cashman and the case should be made. This is a medium term project which will help turn around one of the key entry points to the city and support the livelihoods of small business.

If the sorts of projects that EWH engages with interest you, then we have an opening that you should have a closer look at, for 12 months for a project manager, building partnerships and making challenging small projects related to the historic public realm happen
