Director's Notes - November 2015

Monthly update from EWH Director Adam Wilkinson.

Nov 12, 2015

We have just published our annual review which looks back over the previous year’s work. It outlines the organisation’s successes and the benefits of our work and of World Heritage status with our usual vim and vigour. However, challenges remain – as a charity we can be hugely successful in our mission but not be rewarded, unlike a private company that benefits through increased profits. Creating sufficient income to sustain our activities and their outstanding results is difficult. Furthermore, the breadth of what we do makes it hard for us to tell to the rest of the world what EWH is all about. The better we can do this, the more support we will generate. Any ideas or reflections you might have on this would be very welcome – please drop us a line to info@ewht.org.uk.

As ever, we have a number of project bubbling away in the background, most of which are in the development stages, but out on site at the moment you will that a scaffolding is up on the Canongate over Bible Lands (183-187 Canongate). Here we are supporting the owners in the repair of the front elevation of their building – without its traditional covering of harling, the building’s stone is deteriorating and requires careful repair. For those up for a bit of winter exploration of the city, the next stage of our food heritage trail has been launched in the form of a teacher resource pack, helping engage children with one of the other facets of the city’s history. We are gradually building up a number of excellent resources, using heritage as a means to teach more than just history. If you’d like to support our work in this area, please drop Lorna a line lornaduncan@ewht.org.uk
