Canongate & Holyrood celebrate architectural treasures

A series of free talks starts on Saturday 30 April, looking at the architecture of the Canongate and Holyrood.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament are among a number of Canongate institutions showcasing the area’s world-class architecture, as part of the Scottish Government’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

The area’s buildings are a unique mix of historic and award-winning modern architecture, and their stories will be told through a series of short talks held at each venue. These include the Scottish Parliament, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish Poetry Library, Edinburgh World Heritage, Dynamic Earth, the People’s Story and the Museum of Edinburgh. The public can take these talks as part of a self-guided trail.

Saturday 30 April, 28 May and 18 June
•    11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm at each venue – each talk lasting 15-20 minutes.
•    Free – no booking required.

Meeting points:
- The Scottish Parliament – Main Hall.
- The Palace of Holyroodhouse – Abbey Strand.
- Scottish Poetry Library – outside main entrance.
- Acheson House – courtyard off Bakehouse Close.

* Learn the story of the Palace of Holyroodhouse’s Great Stair, the first cantilevered stairway in the world.
* Hear about the Scottish Parliament’s award winning blend of 17th and 21st century architecture.
* Visit the only purpose built poetry library in the world.
* Take a unique opportunity to learn about the seventeenth century Acheson House.

Please note: The walk does not include entry to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The talk on the Palace will take place in the Abbey Strand nearby.
