Edinburgh World Heritage is working in partnership with St Mary’s Cathedral and the Scottish Government’s People and Communities Fund on the upgrading of the Cathedral grounds.

The project forms the third phase of works, which has already seen a new grassed area created in the north-west corner of the grounds. The cathedral grounds are of great value to the local community and visitors, in an area of the city where little accessible open space is available.,

The grant made available by Edinburgh World Heritage has enabled natural stone paving to be laid and retaining walls to be built, as befits the grounds of a Category A listed building within a World Heritage Site.

The project has also received funding from Scottish Government’s People and Communities Fund, as it provides an excellent training opportunity for the apprentices at the St Mary’s Workshop. Formed in 1987, the workshop is recognised as an exemplar in the UK, with the aims of restoring the cathedral and promoting training in traditional building skills. The students serve a four year apprenticeship and achieve a Scottish Vocational Qualification.

The Very Revd Dr Graham Forbes, CBE, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral said: “Works carried out using the grant from Edinburgh World Heritage will enable safe access for all to the Walpole Hall and the Medical Centre, in particular those with disabilities. Working in partnership with Edinburgh World Heritage has meant that additional works to those originally envisaged have been carried out and the Cathedral is indebted to them for their co-operation.”
